Taking couples photos in Iceland as an engagement photographer
As a Grand Rapids, Michigan wedding and engagement photographer, I never imagined I’d fly halfway across the world to photograph a couple on a glacier—but that’s exactly what happened when Isabella and Leo reached out about their Iceland adventure session. When they told me they were flying in from London and wanted to capture their love story against Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes, I knew this would be something extraordinary. If you’re a playful, adventurous couple who wants engagement photos that feel cinematic and true to who you are, Iceland might just be your perfect backdrop.
Why Iceland is Perfect for Adventurous Couples
Iceland offers something no other destination can replicate: dramatic glaciers, volcanic black sand beaches, cascading waterfalls, and ethereal light that makes every frame look like a scene from a movie. For couples who want more than just pretty poses in a park, Iceland provides an unforgettable experience where you’re not just taking photos—you’re on an actual adventure together. Isabella and Leo’s session perfectly captured this spirit as we chased each other across the ice, played tag in the snow, and laughed our way through the freezing temperatures, all while the glaciers and mountains created a backdrop that felt both intimate and epic.
The Best Locations for Iceland Engagement Photos
Southern Iceland is an absolute goldmine for engagement photography, with accessible yet stunning locations that range from icy blue glaciers to dramatic coastal cliffs. We shot Isabella and Leo’s session near the glaciers in the southern region, where floating blue icebergs and snow-covered mountains created a dreamy, editorial vibe that felt like we’d stepped onto another planet. Other incredible spots include Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach with its basalt columns, the stunning Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can actually walk behind the cascading water, and the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon where icebergs drift serenely through crystal-blue water.
What to Wear for Winter Engagement Photos in Iceland
Isabella and Leo absolutely nailed their outfit choices—they came prepared with cozy scarves, warm mittens and gloves, adorable earmuffs, and stylish jackets that looked incredible on camera while keeping them comfortable in the freezing temperatures. The key is layering pieces that are both functional and photogenic: think neutral tones, rich textures like wool and cashmere, and pops of color that complement Iceland’s natural palette of blues, whites, and blacks. Don’t sacrifice warmth for style—you’ll have way more fun (and better candid moments) if you’re actually comfortable enough to run around and be playful in the snow!
Capturing Blue Hour and Golden Hour Magic
One of Iceland’s greatest gifts to photographers is its incredible winter light—we shot during both golden hour and blue hour, which gave us two completely different moods in a single session. Golden hour bathed the glaciers in warm, honey-toned light that made Isabella and Leo glow against the ice, while blue hour brought out those signature moody, cinematic tones with deep blues and purples that Iceland is famous for. Winter in Iceland means shorter days, so you can actually capture both lighting conditions without an impossibly early call time, making it ideal for couples who want variety and that editorial, magazine-worthy aesthetic.
