Hey there!! I want to let you in on a secret: I’m going to tell you all of the amazing benefits of doing an engagement session with your wedding photographer. If you’re engaged and are on the fence about doing engagement photos, let me share with you some reasons why you should do engagement photos.
I’m a wedding photographer in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area – so I know exactly why I highly prefer to do engagement sessions with each of my clients before their wedding! That’s what I’m here to share with you today. If there’s anything you take away from this, let it be these four reasons to do an engagement session.
1. You’ll get comfortable in front of the camera.
Anyone else get stiff and uncomfortable when a camera points at you? ✋🏼 If I’m being completely honest, I’m answering YES to that question.
When you have an engagement session, you’re allowing yourself some time to get comfortable having a photographer follow you around (because they will feel like your personal paparazzi on your wedding day).
If you’ve never had professional photos done, especially of you & your fiancĂ©, it’s time to rip off the bandaid and start to get comfortable being photographed. It’ll make your wedding day 100x easier!!
2. You’ll get to know your photographer better.
I might be a little biased here (speaking as a wedding photographer), but doing an engagement session helps you get to know your photographer better! And when you know your photographer, you’ll have an automatic buddy to follow you around on your wedding day (rather than someone you just met).
I also really love how couples can get a sense of the photographer’s style when they do an engagement session! It’s one thing to see a photographers photos of a bunch of random people, but when you see yourself in their images – it’s going to reassure that you’ve made the right choice of hiring them.
You’ll be able to experience their shooting style, see how they prompt you for photos, and ultimately, you’re going to feel like your photographer is more than just a STRANGER when they show up on your wedding day.
3. You get extra photos without your wedding attire.
Engagement sessions are an opportunity to get more casual photos of you & your fiancĂ© that aren’t in a tux and tight white dress. It’s always nice to have photos in more “normal” clothes, whatever that means for you! While my wedding photos are soooo amazing and I wouldn’t trade them for the world, the photos I stare at all the time are actually the photos of us in our normal clothes.
4. You can make it wild & adventurous!
An engagement session can be as WILD and ADVENTUROUS as you want it to be!! I’m not saying that your wedding can’t be adventurous too, but sometimes it’s more fun to do crazy photos when you’re not pushed for time on your wedding day! Plus, photographers love to try new & fun ideas whenever they get a chance…so let them know you’re down for something new!
